Why Salsa?:
Because of the music; because of the partnership connection; because "Would you like to dance" beats all cheap pick-up lines, and you don't have to follow up the question with a conversation if you don't want to.
How long have you been dancing salsa and what keeps you coming back for more?:
I've been dancing semi-intensively for about three years and see the previous question for the answer to the second half of this question.
In addition to learning salsa, what else have you gained from the experience?:
A lot of acquaintances, some students, and a few friends.
What are the salsa No-No's when dancing with a partner?:
1. Don't look down.
2. Don't violate the rhythm.
3. Don't lead your partner into anything she might not be able to follow.
4. Don't have a look of intense concentration while dancing.
If you could improve upon one thing in the New York Salsa scene, what would it be?:
That I would take advantage of it more frequently.
What advice would you give someone just starting out in salsa?:
1. Loosen up; relax your mind and body.
2. The rhythm is your master when you begin, and your servant when you internalize it. Listen for it.
3. Dance with your core, not with your feet.
4. Don't use your inexperience as an excuse; get out there and dance.
5. Have fun!
