at a social

Salsa Views:
Why Salsa?:
The music is hot, the dance moves are complicated but beautiful and it can be very athletic but sensual. Plus, it's not hard to find a great place to dance in New York City.
How long have you been dancing salsa and what keeps you coming back for more?:
I've been dancing since June 2007 and have been hooked, or addicted, or obsessed, whatever adjective you want. I'm in love with the complexity but sheer beauty of the dance when two people are in sync despite not knowing eachother or knowing the other's dance intentions.
In addition to learning salsa, what else have you gained from the experience?:
I've learned coordination, balance, core stability, and how to move my hips like Shakira!
What are the salsa No-No's when dancing with a partner?:
Don't be snotty. Just smile and have a good time, even if your partner isn't so advanced. Learn to be light on your feet. Carry a wash cloth and keep the perspiration in check!
If you could improve upon one thing in the New York Salsa scene, what would it be?:
Have strong air conditioning in the dance halls. It can get muy caliente when all those bodies are spinning and moving in the room.
What advice would you give someone just starting out in salsa?:
Don't be afraid to look like a foolish novice when you start out and are practicing your moves because everyone has been there before and the only way to get better is to go to socials and practice, a lot. Practice with people your level, practice with people who are slightly better than you and you'll learn really quickly.
