Why Salsa?:
Because it's the best addiction to have.
How long have you been dancing salsa and what keeps you coming back for more?:
I've been dancing since October '02 and it has never ceased to amaze me.
In addition to learning salsa, what else have you gained from the experience?:
I've gained a strong passion for something that I have never had before, a greater sense of confidence, and many new friends/connections/acquaintences.
My most embarrassing salsa moment was:
While attempting a dip out of a XBL w/ a inside neck-roll turn, my partner felt the need to shoot her arm straight up, busting my lip. Embarrassing since I was trying to show off in front of a bunch of on-lookers at a restaurant, but it was far more painful than it was embarrassing. I couldn't eat w/ out pain for a week.
What are the salsa No-No's when dancing with a partner?:
- Walking off during the middle of a song unless, it's mutual. - Holding your partner's hand w/ a GI Joe kung-fu grip. - Trying to style when you're obviously too close to your partner (see embarrassing moment above) - Going into a long series of shines w/ out paying attention to whether your partner is adept at shining or not. - Dancing as if you have tons of space when you really don't. - Finger-pointing or getting mad due to a botched move.
If you could improve upon one thing in the New York Salsa scene, what would it be?:
Haven't been there yet.
What advice would you give someone just starting out in salsa?:
You'll never look good if you're afraid to look stupid. Don't get caught up in trying to be just like this person or that person. Only they can be them. You do them and yourself a disservice by trying to be just like them. You have to be you. You can take little parts of their style that you like and imitate them, but do what they do YOUR way. Only YOU can be you.
